STREET VENDING

In some first months of this year, Hanoi administration promulgated a regulation about banning street vendors in some main streets. This regulation has caused a great debate among Hanoi’s citizen.

Street vendors – they are unobstrusive persons from all regions of Vietnam, could vary by origins and characteristics but have one in common: relying most of their lives on the pair of shoulder pole. They used to be the cultural images of Hanoi, thus causing many exciting feeling among foreign visitors but now the Hanoi administration is considering the prohibition of street vendors in some main streets.

Supporters of this prohition argue that these street vendors can ruin the capital’s images in some ways. Moreover, following a recent research of Ho Chi Minh Nutrition Center, 100% of their products are insanitary that can lead to serious diseases for their consumers.

However, this forbiddance may create a huge social effect since many street vendors are from rural areas where people can hardly survive on farming only, others cannot find a job in their hometown nor land for farming. Therefore, it is the only way for them to survive.

Prohibition could be a fast and easy solution, but is it a good solution?
