[GLN EC NTD] Topic 13/10: Vietnam's Health Care System


The health system in Vietnam is a mixed public-private provider system, in which the public system still plays a key role in health care, especially in prevention, research and training. Recently, health care is strengthened by national health programs, especially those for important public health problems. However, there have still been lots of pressing issues existing in the Vietnam’s healthcare system, such as quality of healthcare service, qualification of doctors and nurse and healthcare staff training as well, which immediately need improving. This Saturday afternoon, a meeting discussing the Vietnam’s healthcare system will be held. Let’s come and join us to raise more ideas about this field.

  • 1.      If you can choose 3 words to describe the Vietnam’s healthcare system, comparing to others such as U.S or UK system, what will you say? Please explain the reasons.
  • 2.      There are lots of complaints about the attitude of hospital staff (doctors, nurses…) as well as facilities of healthcare services in Vietnam, nowadays. How do you think about this?
  • 3.      Do you think that health insurance does really work? Some people don’t buy health insurance because it is not effective and useful, are you for or against this opinion?
  • 4.      Vietnam also faces problems about the deep differences between urban and rural healthcare services, so what are they? And what create this dissimilarity?

        Besides public hospitals, many private clinics have been established in Vietnam, including international ones. So what are pros and cons of these clinics?
