At the age of adulthood, we may have to face a lot of concerns, for example, about studying at universities, choosing jobs, career, boyfriend or girlfriend and so on. However, among these, choosing a career may be the most difficult decision. There are hundreds of career options, but how can we make a right career choice when sometimes we even don't exactly know what you want to do? Does it seem like an insurmountable task? Come and share with us in GLN EC this weekend with the very hot topic: “Career Orientation”.

Private school or public school, which is the better?

Nowadays, lot types of schools are growing along with the fast-paced living in our society, particularly private (non-state) and public (state) schools. So what are the reasons why we choose one of which? For interest or for advantages? We should consider some aspects relating on fees, condition, facilities and so on to decide which is better and suitable for our attending. We find this topic very interesting and useful at GLN EC on Saturday, 22nd October 2011.

Yes of course, both private and public schools are very popular in Vietnam because of increasing a number of school-attendances. However, it seems to be that public ones have prevailed more than the private because of their lower fees, assurance, qualities and so on, which is mostly agreed in this meeting. Besides, some members raise their different ideas about the advantages and disadvantages of two kinds above. They think that private schools are much better than public ones in terms of qualities, facilities and teaching methods because teachers in private schools are more responsible and enthusiastic in teaching than those in public ones. This may be the fact in Vietnam. That’s all about discussing in pair.

After enjoying some funny and logical games to relax, we move to discuss in groups. We have divided into 3 groups to make presentation with the idea: “Some people feel that the responsibility for providing education should be borne only by government and that private education should be banned. What do you think about this?” This part really attracts all most everyone because each group shows their useful ideas and excellent performance. We not only practice our English but improve our soft skills in this meeting. Thanks to this topic, I can see some big differences between private and public schools in Vietnam more.

Discovering the differences among some interesting words

1. Kind, sort, and type

Very often it makes no difference which of these words we use. But good dictionaries point out some subtle differences. In fact, sometimes only one of these words is correct. For example, it would be wrong to use ’sort’ or ‘kind’ in sentence 1 below.
Compare these three English sentences:
1. What is your blood type?
(Expected answer is a precise named category.)
2. What sort of prices do they charge?
(Expected answer is a description rather than a named category.)
3. What kind of dog is that?
(Probable answer is a named category, but not necessarily as precise as 1 above.
A descriptive answer is also possible.)
So you should remember that:
  • type‘ usually means a precisely defined category.
  • sort‘ is more general, often about character rather than definition and can be used in a negative way e.g. What sort of person would do a terrible thing like that?
  • kind‘ is about half way between, usually referring to large categories or families of things that are naturally related.
=> Note that ‘type’ cannot be used as a hedge phrase, as in ‘She’s a bit sort of (or kind of) upset about it.’
2. Home and House
"Home is where the heart is." A house is just a roof over your head which is not an apartment or a condo or what not. It's only a home if you make it yours.
Another explaination:
Home:- A home could be any place where u live. its a structure of any thing, and it
and it does not create any income to its owner, and there is no tax liablity
on the owner of the home.
House :- When a home started to giving income to its owner it is called house.
" a house, is a another type of home which creats income to the owner
and this income is taxable under house property tax.

The differences between HOPE and WISH
I. HOPE-WISH
1. HOPE
The word “hope” is used to talk about possible situations that we desire in the past, present or future. The important thing to note is that these situations are POSSIBLE. For example:
I hope you had a good time at the party last night.
I haven’t looked outside yet. I hope it’s not raining.
I hope you have a great day.
I hope you’re not going to go to the movie without me.
The last two examples are about the future. In English, we can use the future tense or the present tense after the word “hope” to talk about the future. Both are natural.
2. WISH
On the other hand, “wish” is used to talk about situations that we desire, but which are the opposite of the current reality or which are impossible. For example:
I wish I had a car. (In reality, I don’t have a car now, but I want one).
I wish I didn’t have to work tomorrow. (In reality, I have to work tomorrow, but I don’t want to).
-When we use wish + past perfect tense, we are talking about regrets we have from the past. For example:
I wish I hadn’t gone to the party. (In reality, I went to the party, and now I regret it).
I wish I had studied harder in school. (In reality, I didn’t study hard in school, and now I regret it).
We can use wish + would + verb to talk about situations that often happen in our lives that we don’t like. For example:
I wish my husband would help me clean the house. (In reality, my husband never helps me clean the house, and I don’t like it).
I wish my children wouldn’t play their music so loudly. (In reality, my children play their music very loudly, and I don’t like it).
-We can also use wish + noun to talk about things that we desire for other people. In these cases, the meaning of  “wish” is more similar to “hope”. This way of using “wish”, however, is much less common that the other ways. For example:
We wish you a merry Christmas. (The meaning is: We hope you have a merry Christmas).
Finally, we can use wish + the infinitive form of a verb (this is means “to” + the base form). In these cases, the meaning of “wish” has the same meaning as “want”, but it is more formal. For example:
I wish to see your boss right away.
We don’t have a table available right now. Do you wish to wait?

Private or Public School

Private or Public School
The more modern society becomes, the more attention each parents pays to their children’s education. Looking for the right school seems an uneasy task because of the wide range of both private and public schools. Therefore, not surprisingly, many people wonder whether private educators should be allowed to provide education or only public ones should. This is GLN English Club’s topic this week “Private and Public School”. Let’s come and share with us your own experience and idea about this headline.

Happy Vietnamese Women Day, fascinated with the special meeting!!!

It is a special day, was held on October 20 every year in Vietnam or the celebration to honor women in society. In this occasion, many people express their concern and deep thanks to women because of their contribution to family as well as the society. This topic attracts a lot of members to enjoy discussion and sharing in the last Saturday, 15th October at GLN EC.

A lot of different ideas from members are raised. Almost everyone agree that Vietnamese Women Day is very important and meaningful for them because this is the precious chance to show their gratitude to women, which makes our life more wonderful and meaningful. Women, nowadays, are taking over both family and society tasks-a big change in public view. Should women be treated equally with men in every field? Yes, of course. That’s all about discussing in pair.

The next are the most interesting part - playing games and discussion of groups. We’ve divided into 2 groups: supermen and super girls groups. There are 2 tasks for them: the former has to make gifts to present the girls with the best wishes, the later has to imagine the world would happen if there was no women and then present the reasons for it. Many couples show their performance very well like singing and the luckiest couple received the ticket for movie from the organization.

Vietnam Women’s Day

Since Vietnam Women’s day was first celerarated in 1930, it has been an occasion for men to express their love for women. It  is also seen as an important reminder of women’s role in the society in which we criticize the issue of gender inequality, sexual violence, discrimination or sexual harassment. This week, GLN EC warmly introduces a topic about Vietnam Women’s day. This is the ideal destincation where you can share ideas as well as your own opinion on the above topic with other English passioners. Holidays – not only the day off work!!!

Do you like holidays in Vietnam because of getting the work off? In Vietnam, we have a lot of holidays that are our identities, which makes us more proud of our country. So what do you think about these holidays? Of which do you like most? What are the meanings of them? All these questions were shared and discussed in GLN EC on Saturday 8th October interestingly.

Well, it is the fact that, Vietnam has many holidays in which we can stay off work within permission. However, we just have 9 days of public holidays, and 6 national days like New Year’s (January 1st), Tet (early days of the first month in lunar year), Hung Kings ( 10th of the third lunar month), Liberation Day (30 April), International Worker Day ( 1st May) and Independent Day (2nd September). Besides we discussed about the history and meanings of these holidays, a lot of members told their stories in the days excitingly.

Especially, we had the excellent presentations of two groups in deciding whether celebrated the next Capital Liberation Day (10th October) spectacularly or not. Each group gave their ideas persuasively and helped us understand more deeply about this holiday. I did hope this topic provided you some useful information of holidays in Vietnam – we always expected them to come soon.

Face book- connecting together!!!
Attracted by a huge amount of its advantages, nowadays, more and more people around the world are using Face book as their electronic diary to show the feeling, emotion and profiles. It is also our topic at the last meeting on Saturday, 1st October. We had  the interesting discussions about “History of Face book, compare Face book with other social network site, discussing the pros and cons of Face book, and anything relating to Face book” and so on.

Because of its popularity, all the members were excited to share their ideas about Face book. They agreed that, Face book really changed our world, brought the happiness and comfort to them. Moreover, it also helped you connect with your friends, family wherever and whenever you were. This was the best benefit that brought to us. Although we used it regularly, we may not acknowledge its history and development. “When did it appear? Why has it become more and more developed? Whether it is replaced by another in some day?” were discussed very hot.
What happened with his face? Poor him!
After that we had some funny games to relax and presentations in groups, which helped you more confident in the presentation.
