[GLN EC Saturday] Topic 20/07: “BỤI ĐỜI CHỢ LỚN”

Censorship is the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body. Our nation is well known to the world for having a very extreme policy about censoring that would sometimes lead into very funny, which the movie “Bụi đời Chợ Lớn” is one big example. So what do you think about this case? Should the movie be banned? What would affect the young generation for having it show? Let’s come and share with GLN EC this Saturday afternoon.

1. Have you ever watched “Bụi đời Chợ Lớn” film? What are its messages? How do you feel about this movie?
2. Is this fair to ban this movie from being showed? Why?
3. If you are the producer of the movie, what would you justify for the movie to be public? You are free to propose your ideas.
4. It is rumored that the reason behind the ban of the movie is not violation of censorship policy but the producer failed to “bribe” the board of censoring. Do you believe in this rumor? Why?

• Debate with each other

You will be divided into two groups: Group A would pretend to be the “Board of censoring” and while group B would be the “Board of Director” of the movie “Bụi đời Chợ Lớn”. The Board of censoring will try to convince the Judge (who is pointed by MC) for banning the movie from being shown while the Board of Director will convince otherwise. The Judge  would appraise the group with better reasons, reaction and of course, English speaking skills.
